From Surviving to Thriving

Jun 14, 2026    Pastor Dan Buchert

This powerful message takes us into the heart of what God intended for marriage - not just survival, but genuine thriving. Drawing from Ephesians 5:31, we're reminded that marriage is described as a 'great mystery,' a divine illustration of Christ's relationship with His church. The message challenges us to consider whether it's truly possible in our modern world for two people to become one, and if so, how we can move toward that ideal. We're presented with four essential keys: communication, consideration, commitment, and Christ. The statistics are sobering - 85% of marital problems stem from poor communication, yet the average married couple communicates only four minutes per day while checking phones up to 200 times daily. We're called to remember that God's design for marriage isn't primarily about our happiness, but about our holiness - becoming more like Christ through sacrificial service. The foundation of eros love, while exciting, represents only a tiny fraction of what sustains a marriage. True lasting love is built on agape (selfless love) and phileo (friendship). When we commit to never using divorce as an escape hatch and instead work through difficulties with Christ at the center, we discover the beautiful mystery God intended - two imperfect people united by a perfect Savior.
