Being Good

Aug 9, 2026    Pastor Dan Buchert

What if everything we thought we knew about earning God's favor was actually backwards? This message flips the script on one of the most common misconceptions in spiritual life -- the idea that we have to behave our way into a relationship with God. At the heart of the discussion is a closer look at the Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20, and a surprising discovery: God introduces himself not with a list of demands, but with a declaration of identity and a reminder of rescue. Before a single rule is given, he says 'I am the Lord your God' -- personal, present, and already committed. The commandments, it turns out, are not the condition of the relationship. They are the confirmation of one that already exists. This reframes everything. When we understand that God's laws flow from his love rather than serve as the price of admission, we stop striving and start trusting. That shift -- from performing to receiving -- is where genuine faith begins to breathe.
