Expecting The Best From God

Jul 12, 2026    Pastor Brandon Buchert

What if the obstacles we face aren't actually impossible odds, but divinely orchestrated training grounds? This exploration of David and Goliath challenges our typical understanding of this famous biblical account. Rather than viewing it as a miraculous million-to-one shot, we discover that David's encounter with the giant was the culmination of everything God had been preparing him for. His experiences protecting his father's sheep from lions and bears weren't random hardships—they were precisely the training he needed. The sermon defines expecting the best from God not as positive thinking or treating faith like a genie lamp, but as being confident in God's promises that He is in control, loves us, and has a plan for our lives. This includes both the positive and negative experiences we encounter. We learn three powerful reasons to expect the best from God: it honors Him when we invite Him into our situations rather than relying solely on ourselves; it increases our abilities as God uses even our toughest struggles to prepare us for future challenges; and it encourages others when they witness our faith in action. The practical applications drawn from David's Psalms offer us a roadmap: tune into God every morning with organized prayer, think on His promises throughout the day by memorizing Scripture, trust in His love even when circumstances look bleak, and surround ourselves with other believers. Our faith grows not by avoiding difficulties, but by recognizing that God is bringing us through obstacles to prepare us for something greater.
