What Are You Thinking, Pt 3

Think About Yourself

If you would like to extend this over a week, you can easily do one of the points each day of your devotion.  Here is a printable version.
Romans 12:2 - Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Are you ever confused about who you really are?  The mixed messages we hear from the world around us leave us confused and often feeling powerless—but they are lies.  It’s only when we learn to think like Jesus that we’ll know exactly who we are.  God is calling us as the Body of Christ to a higher standard of living.  We can no longer afford to float our way through life.  There is something he wants to do through us, but he can’t until we learn to think his way.  In this week’s lesson, we’ll explore how to exchange our old thinking for his new thoughts about us.  Open your group with a prayer.  This is only a guide – select the points you want to discuss.
1.  Read Romans 12:2 (above).  To conform is to fit into a mold and involves our external behavior; to transform involves our internal character. Why is it important to make this distinction?  ______________________________________________________________________________________

2.  The words “confess” and “repent” are often full of negative images and confuse us. But “repent” simply means to change the way you think, while “confess” means to say the same thing that God says. Talk about these definitions and share how seeing them in this simpler light changes their impact for you. ______________________________________________________________

Romans 8:1 - There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (ESV)

3.  How can the truth in this verse help set you free from feelings of guilt? ______________________

4.  What is the difference between confessing your sins and confessing your faith? __________________________________________________________________________________________________

How can doing the second more often (confessing your faith) result in doing less of the first
(confessing your sin)?  ______________________________________________________________________

5.  When we say what God says, we begin to think like God thinks. Let God begin the work of transforming your view of yourself into his view of you by reading.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 - I believe Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again from the dead on the third day.

2 Corinthians 5:17 - I am a new creation in Christ; the old life is gone, a new life has begun.
John 8:36 - The Son has set me free. I am free indeed!

Romans 8:1 - There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 10:13 - God is faithful. He will not let me be tempted beyond what I can bear.
Romans 8:38-39 -Nothing can ever separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 3:20 - He is able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within me.

Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

1 John 4:4 - Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.

Romans 8:31 - God is for me! Who can be against me?

6. Read:

Romans 13:11-14 - And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. NIV
